Licensed Officials

Licensed Officials Program

A complete description of the Licensed Officials Program, including requirements for initial licensure, continuing education, and promotion, is available as a free downloadable PDF.

USAWE Judges

USAWE recognizes four levels of Judge Licensure for Working Equitation competitions in the United States:

  • Learner (L) judges are eligible to officiate over Working Equitation schooling shows.
  • Recorded (r) judges are eligible to officiate over B-Rated competitions, up through Intermediate level classes.
  • Registered (R) judges are eligible to officiate over A-Rated, B-Rated, and Regional Championship competitions at all levels.
  • Senior (S) judges may officiate over all WE competitions at all levels in the United States, with no restrictions.

Event organizers are encouraged to contact the judges directly if they are interested in having them officiate at an event they are hosting.

Honorarium rates will vary, based on the individual judges’ availability and proximity to the event, etc.  To help with planning / budgeting, we recommend that the following minimum honorariums be considered:

  • “L” Judges: $250/judging day
  • “r” Judges:  $350/judging day
  • “R” and “S” Judges: $450/judging day

Organizers should plan to cover travel costs (transportation, lodging, and meals) as well as an honorarium for each judging day.  It is generally better to pay reimbursable expenses (travel costs) separate from honorariums due to tax requirements.

USAWE Technical Delegates

USAWE recognizes two levels of Technical Delegate Licensure for Working Equitation competitions in the United States:

  • Provisional Technical Delegates (P-TDs) are eligible to officiate over B-Rated Working Equitation competitions.
  • Technical Delegates (TDs) are eligible to officiate over B-Rated, A-Rated, Regional and National Championship competitions.

The eventual goal is to have a sufficient number of TDs across the country that events will be able to hire licensed Technical Delegates, as licensed TDs can help ensure that events are conducted fairly for all competitors, and they are a great resource for show managers and Judges. Event organizers are encouraged to contact the Technical Delegates directly if they are interested in having them officiate at an event they are hosting.

Honorarium rates will vary, based on the individual TD’s availability and proximity to the event, etc.  To help with planning / budgeting, we recommend that the following minimum honorariums be considered.

  • Provisional TD:  Ideally, P-TDs will be volunteers. In no cases, however, should they be paid more than $75/day
  • TD: $250/officiating day

Organizers should plan to cover travel costs (transportation, lodging, and meals) as well as an honorarium for each day spent officiating at an event.  It is generally better to pay reimbursable expenses (travel costs) separate from honorariums due to tax requirements.

I accidently learned of WE when I volunteered to scribe for the dressage portion of a championship show. I came back the next day for the rest! A pony clubber, eventer, fox hunter, and dressage rider, I immediately signed up for judging seminars with both existing organizations and earned my Technical Delegate with honors license in 2019. I have my USDF Bronze medal and as a USDF L graduate I’d like to put my expertise to work becoming a WE “L”. I have a retired Prix St. Georges horse, a rescue Hanoverian mare with attitude, and am the accidental owner of a Mustang, my WE and liberty horse. I am an avid volunteer at WE and dressage shows and an FEI level experienced dressage scribe.

Olga Hendrickson

Franktown, CO

I was introduced by a friend to Working Equitation, and after watching a clinic, I was hooked immediately! Coming from a dressage background (I have my USDF Bronze and Silver medals) I appreciate that Working Equitation uses dressage for a purpose. The challenge of Woking Equitation is fun for both horse and rider, creating a wonderful training bond. I am thrilled to see the sport growing in the USA and look forward to being a part of this exciting sport’s future!

Trish Hyatt

Chase, British Columbia

One of the first licensed Technical Delegates in North America, Trish Hyatt also offers a variety of educational opportunities through her popular Working Equitation Simplified online seminars. Trish travels to provide clinics as well as fulfill TD duties.

Newton, WI

I’ve had a passion for horses my entire life. Adding WE into the mix only increased the fun and excitement! I love being a student of the horse and sharing horsemanship and the sport of WE with others.

I show my horses in Level 1-level 5.

Currently, I’m training out of my farm in Newton, Wisconsin. I also travel most weekends to teach clinics, lessons or go to WE shows.

My favorite part about Working Equitation is, how it helps the horse and rider become handy for practical ranch/field work and yet also encourages development of proper movement and biomechanics.

Amanda Lamoureux

Wilder, VT

Amanda has been riding since before she could walk and her passion for horses has never ceased. After time spent in many different disciplines from dressage to gymkhana, endurance to agility, and fox hunting to cowboy challenges she found working equitation and fell in love with the sport. Paradise, TX

As a Technical Delegate, I want to help show management teams provide safe, fair, and enjoyable Working Equitation competitions for their participants. I am a Working Equitation enthusiast. My Working Equitation experience started late in 2016 in Texas. I compete, train and continue to learn about this wonderful equine sport. I appreciate this sport for the structure it includes to develop skills and highlight partnership, between riders and their horses, needed for fieldwork. Since the late 1970’s, I have been involved with numerous and varied equine competitions and enjoy riding horses outside of arenas as much as possible.
